SMA Europe awards 4 new grants to cutting-edge research projects

SMA research receives vital funds from SMA Europe. Based on the recommendations received by its Scientific Advisory Board, SMA Europe awarded a total of 544,900 Euros to 4 cutting-edge SMA research projects through its 10th Call for Research Proposals.

The Scientific Advisory Board reviewed and scored 19 very high level SMA research proposals. As only 20% could be funded, hard decisions had to be made and the following 4 were recommended for funding:

  • A network-biology based approach for the development of SMN-independent treatments - Professor Peter Claus, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Germany, €145,900
  • Unravelling the role of Stathmin-2 in SMA as a key cause of MN vulnerability and as therapeutic target - Dr. Monica Nizzardo, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy, €150,000
  • Molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission of the sensory-motor circuit in spinal muscular atrophy - Dr. Christian Simon, University of Leipzig, Germany, €150,000
  • SMA: Mechanisms implicated in the perturbation of the calcium homeostasis and essay of a new therapeutic molecular target - Professor Lucia Tabares, University of Seville, Spain, €99,000

SMA Europe looks forward to the initiation of these projects.
